Can galvanized chain be soaked in industrial chemicals?

By admin / Date May 29,2025

Galvanized chains are not suitable for prolonged immersion in industrial chemicals, especially in highly corrosive chemicals. The following is a detailed introduction of the points:
1. Corrosivity of chemicals
The zinc layer on the surface of galvanized chain is designed to resist the corrosion of natural elements such as moisture and oxygen. However, in industrial chemicals, especially strong acids, alkalis, solvents, or other corrosive chemicals, the zinc layer can be rapidly eroded by chemical reactions, leading to the dissolution or peeling of the galvanized layer.

2. The protective effect of the zinc layer is ineffective
The main function of the zinc layer is to prevent corrosion of the chain substrate (usually steel). When the chain is immersed in certain chemicals, especially highly corrosive substances, the zinc layer will dissolve and lose its protective function, causing the substrate to be exposed and begin to rust, thereby significantly reducing the service life and safety of the chain.

3. Effects of specific chemicals
Some industrial chemicals, such as sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, chloride solutions, ammonia water, and solvents, can quickly attack the zinc layer and cause corrosion reactions, especially at high concentrations or temperatures. These environments will accelerate the consumption of zinc layer, greatly reducing the corrosion resistance of the chain.

4. Choose materials that are more resistant to chemicals
Galvanized chains are not the best choice for applications exposed to chemical environments. Stainless steel chains, especially 316 stainless steel chains with stronger corrosion resistance, or chains treated with special coatings, can be considered for better resistance to chemical corrosion.

5. Considerations for short-term use
If galvanized chains only come into contact with industrial chemicals for a short period of time and the concentration of chemicals is not high, the chain may still be able to withstand them, but this is not a long-term solution. Nevertheless, it is necessary to regularly inspect the chain to ensure that it has not been damaged due to chemical erosion.
